Solar Decathlon is a global student competition in which technical universities compete in designing, building and operating plus-energy houses. The competition was created in 2002 and hosted by the US Department of Energy (DOE).
The Solar Decathlon events directly engage 10,000 students worldwide in curriculum-integrated projects. Student teams are multi-disciplinary and combine engineering and architectural skills. The Solar Decathlon focuses students’ work on solving major sustainability problems of the future. Central, of course, is reducing energy for operating houses from 40% to net 0% of society’s energy consumption. Innovation, sustainable materials and construction, and marketability are also vital aspects in the competition.
In Solar Decathlon Europe 2012 in Madrid, DTU team presented its innovative project FOLD. Students of different study programs and levels participated in the project in close collaboration with the faculty and industry partners. The project FOLD was created throughout an intensive course involving different student works: programming, management, building information modelling, architectural design, indoor and energy engineering, structural engineering and other related activities.
After Madrid, DTU team is going to participate in the next edition of Solar Decathlon Europe 2014 in France. The preparation has already begun: new challenges are taken in order to design the most energy efficient, sustainable and well-thought house. The team, which consists of a mix of old and new members with different study programs, will have to face the following aspects: construction planning, architectural engineering and design, heating and cooling, energy engineering, health and safety planning for construction, developing business plan and strategy.
