Whether it's drafting an email, Tweeting your day, or composing a Facebook status, we constantly edit our thoughts, presenting a revised version of ourselves to the world. This constant self-revision can seep into our writing lives, inhibiting our ability to create a complex and interesting plot. But if we step back and start saying "yes," what wonderful things can happen in our writing? This workshop will answer that question.

Based on one of the foundations of improvisational theater, we will apply the principle of "yes, and..." to our fiction. Instead of instantly editing, we'll expand stories, growing them bigger and fuller, before we get down to that pervasive revision business. Students will participate in freewriting exercises and large group story plotting, preparing themselves to build up and out in their individual story work. Please bring writing materials (paper, pen, etc.), an open mind, and the willingness to say, "yes, and...". Registration required.

Dana Staves received her MFA in Fiction from Old Dominion University, and after graduating, she did a stint as a food writer before finding her home in book media. Her work has appeared in Shaking Magazine, Fiction Writers Review, Alimentum, and other publications. She is a contributor for Book Riot (https://bookriot.com/author/dana-staves/), and can often be found reading, eating, or some combination of the two.
