There will be a vigil in the capitol rotunda, at the bust of Nathan Bedford Forrest, slave trader, Confederate Army general and founder of the Ku Klux Klan. We will remember the massacre, on April 12, 1864, of more than 250 surrendered African American Union troops and noncombatants at Fort Pillow and we will call for the removal of the bust from our capital. There will be a summary of the battle, a reading of eye witness accounts and the ringing of a small bell for each of the dead.
A statue of Forrest was removed from a Memphis park on Dec. 20, 2017. On April 4, a new historical marker will be unveiled in Memphis, recounting how Forrest made his fortune as a slave trader, including dealing in slaves imported directly from Africa for decades after that practise became illegal. It will be on the property of the Calvary Episcopal Church, site of the slave market. The research was done by students at Rhodes College. It is funded by the Nationl Park Service.
