Krav Maga Class

#var:page_name# cover

April is not just about spring showers--it is also Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. The Advocates along with The Community Library are partnering this year to help push back on this epidemic and safeguard our bodies. On Saturday, April 7, in partnership with The Advocates we will host a FREE Krav Maga self-defense class for women and girls ages fourteen and up from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Krav Maga is pronounced “krahv mahGAH” and means “contact combat” in Hebrew. A blend of techniques from boxing, wrestling, aikido, karate, and more, Krav Maga is incredible exercise, but first and foremost it provides concrete skills for self-defense. It was initially taught to the Israeli army in the fifties and, by the seventies, civilians were instructed in it around the world. It is not a sport—no competitions exist—but “a pure self-defense and striking system” that can be used if de-escalation and avoidance strategies, which are also at the core of the Krav Maga ethos, fall short. As founder Imi Litchenfeld said, Krav Maga exists “so that one may walk in peace.” Early instruction includes foundational stances, striking techniques, methods for falling and getting up safely, and essential defenses against scenarios such as headlocks.

Level IV certified instructor Tracie Ide from Idaho Krav Maga in Boise will lead this up-tempo and practical seminar. Ide began practicing Krav Maga a decade ago and in 2014 was selected as the Krav Maga Alliance Instructor of the Year. (Check out this brief, but intense instructional video from Ide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hLP8T99GBsw.) This class is designed to empower women, and thus the community at large. Space is limited and all participants MUST register by calling The Advocates at 208-788-4191 or signing up at www.eventbrite.com (search for “Krav Maga” in Ketchum). Participants should dress comfortably and come prepared for a great workout.
