The 2015 Copper River season will mark my 47th year as a salmon harvester in the CR Delta fishery. I first started fishng in a 22 foot cabin skiff in the late 60's and successsively graduated with the times into incrementally better boats. I have for the most part seen it all and have done it all out on the delta and have learned many skill sets along the way having also owned & operated a design & manufacturing company in the off season.
This Harvester-Direct business model I have been developing now for the past 8 years has been allot fun and an exciting journey. As I continue to develop this model, new quality standards and tools that will empower my fellow harvester to see that they too can change their fishing business and coupled with some more work they can start selling their product at wholesale rather than at ex-vessel prices.
I use a total "Lead-by-Example" and "Total-Quality" approach in developing this model and enjoy sharing the knowledge I have learned on this road less traveled in Alaska's salmon fisheries. The freedom to chart my own cousre into this business and into an ever changing marketplace has afforded me some unique insights that leaves me thinking, we harvesters can do this! The marketplace appreciates the personal "Connect" and level of quality we produce and our story.
So embracing the one constant in life, "CHANGE" and understanding if "we always do what we have always done, we will always get what we have always got" those that can see their way into this model and are passion driven harvesters have allot to gain and like I said, I am happy to share what I have learned to empower my fellow fisherman on their asking.
A healthy rural Alaskan fishing economy starts from the bottom then up.
