He was based in Butuan City. A young woman, Clarita Turla Joson, put up a “botica,” being a pharmacist, and settled in the river town of Esperanza, which was frequented by the members of the malaria control unit. And so started a romance that led into marriage.Their first born (Ma. Theresa) died of leukemia when she was five years old. The Angeles were residing in the newly established sitio of Bayugan. The parents of Dr. Angeles came from Morong, Rizal to give the couple moral and spiritual upliftment. And what a fruitful visit it turned out to be. It was Justo Angeles advised the couple that, being pioneers of this place, it is their moral obligation to contribute if not spearhead the development of the municipality and its people. They realized they should leave a good legacy to the people of Agusan.Using the money they received from the insurance company for the death of Ma. Theresa, they heeded the advice of the old man to put up a school. In 1966, the Southern Agusan Institute (SAI) was born. The first principal was Justo Angeles. They offered high school education in a two-storey building with six classrooms. Thus, was SAI’s humble beginning.
