Bill Essig has been training in martial pursuits for over 44 years. He began Aikido training in 1984 with Pat Hendricks Shihan 7th Dan. He is the last of the first generation students at Aikido of San Leandro, the long-time Dai-Sempai and remains the longest term student at Aikido of San Leandro, having participated in the demonstrations at the Dojo Grand Opening in 1984 and having received his Shodan at Aikido of San Leandro in 1988.
In 1992 as Nidan he traveled to Iwama, Japan, to study with Morihiro Saito Shihan as uchi-deshi.
After returning to San Leandro from the founder’s dojo in Iwama, Morihiro Saito Shihan granted him the 3rd level Aiki-Ken and Aiki-Jo Transmission Scroll as well as 3rd dan Iwama Ryu, authorizing Essig Sensei to teach additional sections of the Aiki-staff and Aiki-sword.
Promoted to 5th Dan Aikikai (Kagami Baraki Jan 1, 2008). Currently a member of the CAA Div. 1 Teaching Committee since 2001, and the Examination Committee since 2008. Essig sensei has experience in teaching international seminars as well as day-to-day Keiko. He received a ”Shidoin” (Instructor) calligraphy from Hendricks Shihan in 2009.
Essig Sensei’s experience on the mat is bolstered by 18+ years national and international competitive experience in European Fencing. In 1984 he placed 1st in the Northern California division Men’s Saber championship, 1st in the Halberstadt Memorial Handicap Saber, finalist in The Pilar Memorial Saber, finalist in The Pacific Coast Section Saber Championship and then, in New Orleans, qualified in the trials for the U.S. National Squad of 24 (a.k.a. Olympic squad) in Men’s Saber. He was special fencing coach to the University of California. Berkeley, Fencing Club and Team for 6 years (79’~85’), and has taught Fencing in numerous S.F./Bay Area clubs and private schools for over a decade.

Shindo Dojo is dedicated to transmitting the essential teachings of the founder of Aikido, Morihei Ueshiba, as taught by his longest standing student and world renown teacher, Morihiro Saito Shihan.
