Description |
The Aroostook Band of Micmacs Education Department offers educational support to all students regardless of age. The goal of the department is to make sure each student receives the educational support and encouragement that is needed to become successful students. To reach this goal, the Department offers a number of programs to assist students. Such programs include: The Johnson O'Malley Program -a supplemental educational program enacted in April 1934 to meet the specialized and unique needs of eligible Micmac children attending public schools. Services provided by the program are tutors, career and enrichment opportunities, the monitoring of student academic progress and to supply information to students concerning scholarships & higher education opportunities. Adult Education - The Aroostook Band of Micmacs Education Department operates under the guidelines detailed in 25 CFR Part 46 for the Adult Education Program and will support local projects or programs designed to: Assist Micmac adults in the acquiring of basic educational skills, including literacy; Support Micmac adults as they continue their education through the secondary school level; Establish career education projects intended to improve employment opportunities; Provide educational services or instruction for elderly, disabled, or incarcerated Indian adults; Prepare individuals to benefit from occupational training; and Teach employment-related skills. Vocational Education - The Aroostook Band of Micmacs Education Department will assist Indian students in acquiring job and educational skills necessary to acquire and maintain full-time satisfactory employment. Measures of assistance include, but are not limited to: grant awards for a student's demonstrated unmet financial need, assistance in applying for scholarships, counseling, and guidance.
