Avant-garde (French pronunciation: [avɑ̃ɡaʁd]) means "advance guard" or "vanguard". The adjective form is used in English to refer to people or works that are experimental or innovative, particularly with respect to art, culture, and politics. AGCFTA evolved from the desire to take art "to the streets". Informal arts programs created themselves (after school, during school holidays, & even during expulsion from school) at commercial art gallery Bob Doster's Backstreet Studio as neighborhood youth gravitated there to hear the live performances, see exhibits, and interact with artists of all disciplines. Wonderful folks in the community stepped in with donated art supplies, mentoring opportunities, and a wealth of volunteer assistance.
