Blaney W. Harris, Ledyard, Connecticut
Blaney was born February 9, 1947 in Mount Kisco, New York, where his early artistic ability was first noted by his grade school teachers. Upon high school graduation he was accepted for formal art training at the Boston University School of Fine Arts, where he studied for four years. During this period, he sold several works.
His art career was put on hold when he enlisted into the U.S. Navy, serving aboard fleet ballistic submarines. During his final years in the Navy, he began painting again. Following his retirement, after twenty years, he resumed his career as an artist.
Blaney's works were soon accepted in regional juried exhibitions that included galleries in Mystic, Niantic and Hartford, as well as being accepted in various Connecticut Artist's Exhibitions at the Slater Art Museum in Norwich. Blaney is also an Elected Artist Member of the Mystic Art Association.
His latest works are presently being exhibited at the Finer Line Gallery in Mystic, CT., at the Wickford Cove Framing Gallery in Wickford, RI., and at the Artware Store in Groton, CT. He has also participated in the Virtu Art Festival at Wilcox park, Westerly Rhode Island.
Blaney enjoys working in a variety of mediums including pencil, watercolor, pastels and oils. Over the last couple of years, he has focused on plein air painting, documenting the seasons. His background in at-sea navigation, inspired by his years in the Navy, as well as his immense appreciation for Naval history, has led him to paint oil paintings featuring the large sailing vessels of the past. He researches details of the selected ships carefully in order to create works that are historically accurate. Additionally, his paintings have been especially noted for their spectacular settings and treatment of light.
Because of his unusual first name, which is of old Irish heritage, he has begun signing his works with his first name only. He resides in Ledyard, Connecticut with his wif
