|About||Blood is Life and has no substitute. Every two seconds someone needs a blood transfusion. When you give blood, you give a mother another day with her child, a father an opportunity to read yet another bedtime story, another walk in the park with friends.|
|Mission||Through philanthropy and grant making, the Foundation’s mission is to support Blood Systems, Inc. (BSI) and specifically, the Institute for Transfusion Medicine (ITxM), in fulfilling their mission to advance cutting-edge research and provide a safe and ample blood supply that meets the needs of the healthcare communities, patients, and donors in our service areas.|
Blood Science Foundation was incorporated as a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization in 1987.
As the largest independent blood organization in the nation, the consolidated entity collects and distributes approximately 1.5 million red blood cells annually to over 1,000 facilities in 30 states.
The Foundation granted contributions to tax-exempt organizations totaling approximately $25 million. In 2017, the Blood Science Foundation became an independent supporting charity and Foundation following the merger of the ITxM with BSI.
ITxM is the parent organization for the Central Blood Bank (headquarters in Pittsburgh, PA), Virginia Blood Services (headquarters in Richmond, VA), and LifeSource (headquarters in Chicago).
ITxM is one of the nation’s foremost organizations specializing in transfusion medicine and related services.
