Welcome to the Buddhist Society of Elkhart! We hope the following will give you an idea of what to expect during a visit to our Monday night practice session.
Before entering the cultivation room, please remove your shoes and turn off your cell phones. Take a seat and relax as you listen to the chant that is playing. We begin the session by ringing the handbell and asking everyone to rise. After bowing and the opening verse, Venerable Wuling will invite everyone to be seated.
Lectures and Discussions:
Please do not speak until the Dharma talk is concluded, which is when Venerable says ”Amituofo” and asks for comments or questions. During the discussion sessions, please wait for whoever is speaking to finish before speaking yourself. Do not interrupt the person speaking or start talking to another person.
While we understand that people can have many questions about Buddhism, we ask that during the discussion time only questions that focus on the night's teaching be raised. If you have a question on something other than class material, please save it for after the class is over.
Walking and Sitting Meditation
After Venerable ends the discussion, silently form a line for walking meditation. If there are newcomers, Venerable will explain how to do the walking and what to chant. Hands are held in together at chest level until you reach the back corner and turns to walk toward the front of the room. Move hands to pay homage to the Buddha and then lower them to waist level with the left hand resting on the right and thumbs lightly touching. This is the same hand position used in sitting meditation. If you need to leave the room, please rejoin the walking meditation by taking a place at the end of the line.
As the walking meditation is ending, we will continue until we are back at the chairs. Do not get out of line to return to the one you were sitting in before, just sit down where you are. Please remain standing until everyone is in front of a chair and Vener
