|Mission||Mission is to raise $400k to build a new Scout and Guide HQ, to serve all the young people of Burley in Wharfedale.|
Delicious anticipation filled the air at Saturday’s bonfire in Burley-in-Wharfedale, when a fundraising appeal for a new Scout and Guide hut was launched.
Thousands came to relish homemade fare and fireworks at the event organized by the local Scout and Guide Association, which has just received planning permission to build a new HQ at its home on Peel Place.
The current 1960s’ building has been condemned as “wholly inadequate” by leaders of the 300 Scouts, Guides, Cubs, Brownies, Rainbows, Beavers, Explorer Scouts and Rangers who meet there each week.
A lack of space, poor design and minimal facilities have also been blamed for a waiting list of 150 youngsters from Burley and surrounding areas eager to join the movement.
Guide leader Sue Vint explained why it was so important to replace the current building, for which £400,000 must be raised: “We’ve made do for many years with a hut that simply isn’t up to the job.
“There’s no insulation and little heating, so you can imagine how cold it gets in the winter. And because of the layout, it’s very difficult to hold more than one meeting at the same time, which means we can’t accommodate all those who would like to join.
“Given the benefits of scouting and guiding for young people, it’s vital we replace this dilapidated shed with something fit for the 21st century!”
She said as well as applying for community grants, the fundraising committee would run many more events to raise money and she appealed for volunteers to help.
“We’ve got a long way to go but are confident the community will rally round to support us in our efforts.”
