Cafe Chicago is a fair trade and organic coffee roasting workers' cooperative. It creates jobs for immigrant day laborers and domestic workers, fundraises for Latino Union through coffee sales, and creates a new model of social action. Locally roasted coffee is delivered fresh to your doorstep each Friday.
Café Chicago seeks to address real and growing economic and social failures within our society. Immigrants are exploited by our economic and business practices, then targeted for repression by nativist and anti-immigrant groups. A class of owners and managers not doing the actual work makes decisions in the work place. Jobs are often meaningless and often put workers into the unfortunate role of constructing their own demise.
The creators of Café Chicago recognize the need to find new ways of doing things, ways that values human beings and our longings for freedom, community, and justice at every step. We are establishing alternative economic structures that model a different way of making a living, of developing real vocation, of funding social change. This new model prizes equality, integrates community organizing and economic justice, promotes cooperation and solidarity, and builds communities resisting poverty, oppression and injustice.
A project of the Chicago Coffee Confederation and the Latino Union, Cafe Chicago was founded in 2011 by the Latino Union and David Meyers of the Chicago Coffee Confederation.
