|About||Welcoming singers of all ages and abilities, we rehearse cool jazz, soul and groove based arrangements on selected Sundays from 4.30-6.00 at St Matthews Primary School, Cambridge. Please look on our home page for rehearsal dates for the forthcoming term.|
The Cambridge Jazz Festival Choir was started after the inspirational workshop run by Pete Churchill and the London Vocal Project at the first Cambridge Jazz Festival in 2015. Pete introduced the novel rehearsal techniques he employs with LVP, such that after a couple of hours, he had a fully operational jazz choir ready to take to the stage alongside LVP at their gig for a couple of numbers that afternoon! Following that experience, many of the workshop members wanted to carry on learning the techniques and the repertoire they'd got a taste of - and the Cambridge Jazz Festival Choir was born!
Now in it's second year, Cambridge Jazz Festival Choir rehearses fortnightly and welcomes singers of all ages and abilities - it is very much a community project (we have several families amongst our members), there are no auditions, no previous experience is necessary, and you won't be asked to so much as glance at a page of printed music!! Everything is learned "by ear", which takes a little longer but has the big advantage that, come performances, the emphasis is on the ensemble and not on the individual parts. It takes a bit of getting used to, particularly if you are accustomed to a more traditional approach of reading a score...but the challenge is definitely worth it!
The choir is run by the fabulous professional singer and musician Andi Hopgood, herself a London Vocal Project member. We sing a variety of jazz, soul, and gospel-inspired arrangements and we gig regularly featuring soloists from amongst our members (only if they volunteer!!), including at the jazz festival where it all started. We are always excited to welcome new members at any point throughout the term - do get in touch!
