The Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre (CanTYD) is a non-profit organization dedicated to youth empowerment in the Tamil-Canadian community. Based in Toronto, CanTYD was formed to address the needs of at-risk youth in the community.
In February 1998, 17 Tamil-Canadian university students and graduates came together to empower our youth to become successful, contributing citizens. Hence, the Canadian Tamil Youth Development Centre (CanTYD) was formed.
Beginning as a fledging youth organization of 17 students, CanTYD has since grown to a thriving organization of 5 Staff, over 150 volunteers, 500 young participants, outreach in 5 schools, and has touched the lives of many youth across Toronto.
CanTYD Basketball Development League:
CanTYD initiated a basketball league for the youth in late march for the purpose of teaching youth certain team building skills while helping them reinforce their individual strengths. The league consists of about 26 youth who are regular attendees of our recreational activities. The 26 youth were split into four teams each with an individual coach. The coaches all volunteered their time to improve the skills of each youth in basketball and their personal growth as well.
