The school opened in 1998 at the site of the Charlotte Islamic Center. After the September 11, 2001 attacks the school received threatening phone calls, forcing it to close for a week.In 2004, the school moved to a building owned by a local Presbyterian church after disagreements with the Islamic Center over control of religious education. The school then hired Dr. Shagufta Raja, a physicist from the Charlotte area, as its Principal. Dr. Raja led the school to great success and the enrollment more than tripled in a short period of time. However, the school was dealt several financial blows that resulted in the re-merger of the two Islamic schools. The current Principal is Mr. Azim Beg
