In 2000, the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation (CFA) awarded the Sheriff’s Office state accreditation after the agency demonstrated proficiency in more than 230 policies and procedures. These standards cover everything, specifically training of sworn personnel, hiring and promotional guidelines and strict financial accountability. Our agency passed with a 100% rating, only one in a few in CFA history. We successfully maintained our accredited status three years later in 2003 and again 2007.
Also in 2003, the Sheriff’s Office received law enforcement recognition from the Commission on Law Enforcement Accreditation (CALEA). In 2005, our agency began the process for seeking full national accreditation from CALEA, which includes compliance with almost 450 standards. Only 6% of law enforcement agencies across the nation have achieved this honor. In 2007, we became part of that 6% when the Citrus County Sheriff's Office was awarded accreditation from CALEA. We are proud of this accomplishment and attribute it to the high quality of work put forth by our employees.
In 2007, the Emergency Operations Center, specifically the 911 Center, received national accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies' Public Safety Communications Accreditation Program. This achievement is noteworthy because only four other centers in the State of Florida and only 47 centers across the nation have earned this honor.
