Cuchara Mountain Park cover
Description The Cuchara Mountain Park (CMP) is situated in the Cuchara Valley just 3 miles from the village of Cuchara, Colorado on 48.43 acres and on a portion of what used to be the Cuchara Mountain Resort (CMR). Cuchara is in south central Colorado, in Huerfano County, approximately 2 hours South of Colorado Springs, 1.5 hours South of Pueblo and 1 hour from Trinidad. CMR was a ski area that was operational on and off for almost twenty years until it closed in July of 2000. CMR was controlled by 9 different owners since it was started, most from outside of Colorado. Over the last 16 years since closure, egress to and use of this beautiful land and the National Forest beyond by the public has been prohibited.

In 2016 the Cuchara Foundation (CF), a 501c3, undertook an initiative to assist Huerfano County in purchasing the most of what had been referred to as the “lower part of the CMR mountain”. The CF vision was to see that the property would be conveyed out of the hands of the many private owners and developers that failed to make the CMR commercially viable and bring it under the ownership and control of County Government for revitalization and to make it a sustainable year-round community recreation venue open to all with free access from the public.

In early 2017, Huerfano County purchased the 48.43 acres at the base of the former CMR. The acreage includes a couple of useful buildings, one ski lift and associated assets that rise about one third of the way up the mountain, abutting thousands of acres of the San Isabel national Forest on three sides, parking lots at the base and egress to the acreage, excluding two large base buildings that are in disrepair and a couple of Cuchara Water and Sanitation facilities. (See Map)

Huerfano County has set up an Advisory Committee to oversee the formation and operation of the Cuchara Mountain Park with excellent representation from across Huerfano County. They have named representatives from the Cuchara Water and Sanitation Dis
