|About||Derian House provides respite and care for children and young people with life limiting or life shortening conditions.|
This year will see Derian House Children’s Hospice celebrating 25 years of providing vital care for life threatened children and young people, and support for their families.
Since the hospice first opened its doors in 1993 there is much that has been achieved in that time, with Derian House taking the lead on a range of care initiatives that have contributed to developing a framework of support that provides families with the very best in children’s hospice care.
As we look forward to this very special anniversary, we feel extremely privileged to be counted as friends of the many families we have cared for and supported in the past, as well as those to whom we continue to offer ongoing support. And of course, there will be countless others in the future who will need us to be there for them, to provide not only a high standard of specialist care for their child, but a reassuring framework of emotional support for them as a family.
Families who have a child with a life shortening or life threatening condition can choose from a range of services to meet their individual needs, either at home or in Derian House. The emphasis is on providing them with choices which deliver an approach to care, as individual as they are.
Indeed, only a parent who has had to face such a profoundly emotional journey can comprehend or begin to explain what it means to them and their child to have the care and support that Derian House has to offer…
The cost of continuing to provide this high level of care and support will be in excess of £3.95 million next year, and in the absence of any significant statutory funding, most of that money will come from our own efforts, and the generosity of our friends and supporters in the community.
So, on behalf of Derian House, all the children and young people we care for, and the families we support, thank you for taking the time to read this, and for your ongoing support of Derian House.
Derian House is a purpose built children’s hospice with nine beds for children and young people up to the age of 18 years, and a newly completed four bed extension, Derian Lodge, which is for young adults aged 16 – 25.
At Derian House we offer professional care, practical help and emotional support to the whole family. Whether in the hospice through short planned stays, or in the family home with the backing and encouragement of our Hospice at Home Team, the support we provide is driven entirely by the family’s needs and wishes.
We are currently supporting more than 250 families of children with a life limiting illness, and a further 200 families who are receiving bereavement support. For them, Derian House is a lifeline in helping them cope with the highs and lows of their child’s illness, and its aftermath.
