The American Civil War between the Union and the Confederacy was one of the defining moments in American history; it ended the institution of slavery and set an example for those states which would try to secede from the union. Fought from 1861-1865, it included the bloodiest days in American history; more American soldiers lost their lives than in any other war that America has been involved in. Simultaneously a bright and dark moment in American memory, The Civil War achieved great good, but at the cost of hundreds of thousands of lives and a permanent divide in the psychologies of the north and south.
