After a short but successful February run with sold-out performances, J-Town Playhouse is reviving "Assassins" for four encore performances.
“Assassins” imagines what nine men and women who attempted to assassinate the president of the United States (four of them successfully) would have said to each other and to us if they could. They are convinced they were lied to, that they were promised the American dream, their prize, and then forgotten and ignored. “No one listens,” they repeat. John Wilkes Booth quotes Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman: “Attention must be paid”. “Everybody’s got the right to be happy,” goes the opening number. “The country is not what it was,” declares Booth.
Surprisingly funny, stirring, and thought-provoking, “Assassins” is a candid exploration of the American psyche. A tragic comedy about how a country built on dreams can lead to chaos and despair. This play is thoroughly relevant.
With music and lyrics by eight-time Tony Award winner Stephen Sondheim and an incisive book by John Weidman, “Assassins” is a musical and dramatic masterpiece.
Featuring some of the best English-speaking actors in Israel, musical direction by Nadav Amir-Himmel, and direction by Layla Schwartz (Avenue Q, First Date, & Next to Normal at J-Town Playhouse).
