The City of Akron Holocaust Commemoration Committee invites the community to the 30th City of Akron Holocaust Arts & Writing Contest Awards Ceremony and 32nd City of Akron Holocaust Commemoration on Tuesday, April 10, 2018, at the Main Library of the Akron-Summit County Public Library (60 S. High Street). This event is free and all are welcome to attend.
The awards program begins at 6:00 PM. Winning students and their work will be recognized with the commemoration presented at 6:30 PM. In recognition of the 30th anniversary of the contest, the Miller South School of the Arts choir will share a special performance of ‘I Never Saw Another Butterfly’ cantata under the direction of Paul Stewart.
The commemoration will feature Barbara Turkeltaub, a Holocaust survivor, who will share her testimony. During the height of the war, Barbara was a child who was kept hidden in a Catholic convent, along with her sister. After the war, Barbara was reunited with her mother, sadly a person she didn’t even remember.
The Main Library will display award-winning works April 3 through May 3. Artwork will also be on site at the Shaw JCC located at 750 White Pond Dr. starting on May 3rd through May 6th.
Students from Akron and Summit County were invited to submit entries to the contest in Division I [Grades 6-8] or Division II [Grades 9-12] - in art or writing categories. This year’s contest and commemoration theme is “Lessons of the Holocaust: The Lives of the Children”.
