Wu Qin Xi, usually translated as the "Five Animal Play", “Five Animal Exercises” or "Five Animal Play" are a set of Daoying (usually translated as Qigong) exercises developed during the Han dynasty (202 BC - 220 AD), by Huatuo, one of the most famous ancient master of Chinese Medicine. He carefully observed the movements of different animals and found that the five animal can be simulated to improve motion ability, disinhibit joints and sinew, prolong life and and treat diseases. It was passed onto gifted disciples and also practiced as a Taoist health promotion practice. One of his disciple, called Fan A lived over 100 years old!
The five animals in the exercises are the tiger, deer, bear, monkey and crane. According to the Five Elements theory in Chinese Medicine, each animal has two exercises corresponding to the yin and yang internal organs (Zang organs and Fu organs).
