Pestle Needle (杵针)
Pestle Needle was invented by Professor Li Zhong Yu (1920~2003). He has been teaching in Chengdu University of TCM since 1956. He was promoted to Chef Physician in 1986.
Pestle Needle originates from Taoist Yang Sheng (Health Cultivation and Promotion) and Dao Ying (Qi Gong) practices. The ancestor of Li’s family learned the technique of Pestle Needle from Taoist Master Ruhuan in Wudang Mountain. From then on, it has passed through 16 generations. Prof. Li Zong Yu is the successor of 14th generation. Li Zhong Yu has been working as physician over 60 years. In 1970s, he published Pestle Needle.
Now it’s a unique and effective therapeutic method. It’s a national accredited project of continuous medical education.
Pestle Needle is not recorded in ancient classics or Dao Zang (Taoist Sutra). It is only orally inherited rather than literally. Pestle Needle’s philosophy comes from Yi Jing (Book of Chang) within which the Li, Qi, Xiang and Shu theories are widely used in differentiation, composing formulae, selecting points, arranging needles.
