Joan of Arc was canonized in 1920, which set off a wave of interest in the young martyr – George Bernard Shaw’s play and Dreyer’s film are two of the great works about St. Joan. This film shows a near-legendary intense focus on Joan from trial to execution, and in the face of the actress Falconetti, Dreyer found, in his words, “What I might, with very bold expression, allow myself to call “the martyr’s reincarnation.”
