Talk: Bizet's 'Carmen', past and present: Spanish gypsy and French heroine

This talk will discuss how Bizet's Carmen came to be – starting with Prosper Merimée's novel, the first Carmen, Célestine Galli-Marié, how the character has developed over time, and how we might see her today. There will (of course!) be examples of the wonderful music, examples of past performances and a discussion of the way an understanding of the French lyrics can aid appreciation of George Bizet's masterwork – all in time for the upcoming Opera Hong Kong production of "Carmen" during the French May.

About Peter Gordon:

In addition to his contributions to the better understanding of opera music in Hong Kong (including many workshops about Italian opera), Peter Gordon is the editor of the Asian Review of Books. A graduate of Harvard, he has lived in Hong Kong since 1985. Peter Gordon was involved in the establishment of The Man Asian Literary Prize and other leading literary events.
