Russell Powell is an abstractionist painter and writer who is known for his agricultural work with the New England Apple Growers Association and his environmental advocacy. Recently, he has applied his organizational skills to bringing together salon style community gatherings for artists in Hatfield. He is principally an introspective artist though. The group of paintings shown as part of the visiting artist project at the Anchor House of Artists is large, oil paint abstractions are taken from his reflections on walks he takes through the woods of Hatfield down to the Connecticut River. The exhibit opens on April 6 and runs to April 29 during regular gallery hours as posted at the gallery site. There is a public reception on Friday, April 13, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Arts Night Out. On Friday, April 27 at 7:00 p.m., a special video presentation will be featuring Powell's short films, Airstreamin', a quirky documentary about a convention of Airstream trailers that descended upon UMass and Shack Time, a documentary about the artist shacks in the dunes of the Cape Cod National Seashore. The public is invited to this child-friendly event.
