The Mayo Clinic Dolores Jean Lavins Center for Humanities in Medicine is delighted to announce that Dr. Laura Ellis, Associate Professor and Carillonneur of The University of Florida, will be giving a special guest recital on the Rochester Carillon Sunday, August 12, 2018. Dr. Ellis’ recital is the culmination off a numerous events worth of celebration of the the 90th anniversary of the dedication of the Rochester Carillon in 1928.
Her program will include audience-friendly favorites, including blues and ragtime selections by famed carillon composer John Courter. The finale of the concert will consist of a duet performance with Mayo Carillonneur Austin Ferguson of the entirety of Ronald Barnes’ “A Carillon Concerto for Two to Play.” The “Concerto” was commissioned by Rochester resident Lois Whitlock for Mayo’s carillon and premiered at the 1981 Congress of the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America, held in Rochester in June of that year. The complete work has not been performed on its dedicatory instrument since the premier performance almost 40 years ago.
