Yet none of this could have been foreseen during this early years, and during the crisis over the passing of the Great Reform Act, his popularity plummeted. But by the time of his death, there were many, including Queen Victoria, who wondered how the United Kingdom would survive without him. And ever since, his military prowess has been both an inspiration and a reproach to those lesser commanders who have come after.
