The original Dundee Lunatic Asylum, opened in 1820, was situated to the north east of the town, in what is now the Stobswell area, a site ‘considerably elevated’ above the city where the air was ‘free and unconfined’. By the 1870s, the asylum was hopelessly overcrowded, the city had surrounded its walls and plans were underway to move the asylum to new buildings at Westgreen.

This talk will explore the history of Dundee Royal Lunatic Asylum during its time in the Stobswell area, looking at the building of the asylum and life within its walls during this period.
