The Federal Theatre Project was the first target of the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC). Its Director, Hallie Flanagan, was called to testify in 1938 and claimed that the FTP had reached 25 million Americans with plays and readings about the issues of the day. All the more reason to worry, thought the congressmen, who were seeing a communist taint to the plays and the actors, directors and writers who produced them. They found Hallie Flanagan a formidable advocate and defender of the Federal Theatre.
