On April 17th, 2018 at 6:30 pm in SIS Founders Room, AUSG Women’s Initiative will hold “Art & Activism: The Body Politics & The Power of Performance,” highlighting the work of artist and activist Emma Sulkowicz. Sulkowicz’s work has drawn attention to sexual violence and the impact of rape culture.
A graduate of Columbia University, Sulkowicz is known for the Mattress Performance (Carry That Weight), which involved carrying a dorm room mattress around Columbia University campus for an entire school year after the university mishandled Sulkowicz’s sexual assault case. Covered widely by various major media outlets, Emma’s action helped spark a campus anti-sexual assault movement – drawing the support of students around the world and influencing institutions to change their policies and practices.
Some of Sulkowicz’s recent work includes The Healing Touch Integral Wellness Center, Self Portrait (Performance With Object), and Newspaper Bodies (Look, Mom. I'm On The Front Page!). Sulkowicz is also a graduate of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program.
Join us along with our co-sponsors, the Kennedy Political Union and Students Against Sexual Violence, as we learn more about Emma Sulkowicz’s evolution as an artist and activist, delving into a discussion on body politics and the power of performance - particularly in the current political and social climate.
The event will be open to AU students and AU ID will be required upon entry to the event. AUSG WI is committed to providing accessible events, please email email@example.com with any questions, concerns, or requests for accommodations.
