Transitioning from elementary school to high school or high school to the next stage in life can be a time of excitement for young people and their families, but it can also be a time filled with uncertainty.
Whether a child is moving out of the family home, going to college, entering the workforce or starting another big adventure, they will need extra support. Parents and caregivers play a big role in ensuring the transition is a success.
With that in mind, a “Transition to Adulthood Planning Toolkit” was created, by a group of individuals representing local organizations, to assist parents and their children to navigate this important time.
The Transition to Adulthood Planning Toolkit guides parents throughout their child’s transitions from elementary school (grade 7) to high school and from high school to adulthood in a parent-friendly step-by-step format. The Toolkit is designed as a ‘working document’ for families, comprised of family friendly language. It allows for families to track their child’s transition by checking off steps, recording notes and using the cover designed with pockets to file important documents.
We are eager to share this new and amazing resource with our families, and the community of Niagara.
Our information workshop explaining the Transition Toolkit will be held at the Chapter and presented by Vanessa Coens, the Adult Support Coordinator at Autism Ontario Niagara. Families will get a chance to walk through the resource step by step, and ask any questions during the presentation.
