The writers are local. The plays are brand new. The process is inclusive, constructive, and FUN. And our audience picks the theme!

Each year since 2005, The Variations Project has created an amazing, diverse collection of world premiere ten-minute plays in Baltimore. Now, the region's longest-running festival of its kind is back with VARIATIONS ON SACRIFICE — and we want you to get involved.
It all starts with the Variations Party. Join us on April 7 and get in the conversation about this year’s theme. “Sacrifice” was chosen by audience vote during the production of last year's Variations on Magic. How much can a person give up before losing everything? Is the ultimate goal worth the ultimate sacrifice? At the party, we’ll engage these questions and many others, developing raw material for authors of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience to write about. Plays will be submitted in May, we’ll hold open readings in June, and choose a final group of 8 to 12 plays which we’ll present on stage in August.

If you’re interested in joining us, drop us a line at VariationsProject@gmail.com and we’ll send you an invitation to the party in Baltimore (it's at a private home, so we don't advertise the address publicly). We hope to see you there!

Important dates and guidelines:

April 7 – The Variations Party, in Baltimore. 7:00pm. There’s no charge to attend. POT LUCK -- if you can, bring a dish to share.

May 7 – Deadline for play submissions. Plays must be new, roughly 10 minutes (1200-1800 words) in length, and in .doc format. There is no fee to submit. No more than two submissions per author, please. We want playwrights to join us in the process of creating and developing their work, so please be from the DelMarVa area so you can participate with us in person. Our production will be performed by an ensemble cast of about 6-8 actors so please be open to nontraditional casting and avoid writing something requiring many actors.

May 12-31 – We will hold readings of submissions (hopefully all of them!), with actors from our ensemble and others. Playwrights will be strongly encouraged to attend and will have opportunities through the Q&A and feedback to make revisions before final selections are made. Not only will these readings help us to develop and choose the final group of plays, they’ll also be used to audition actors for this year’s production.

June 1 – We will announce the group of roughly 8 to 12 plays, which will be produced on stage as Variations on Sacrifice, and start rehearsals!

August 2-12 – Variations on Sacrifice appears at Baltimore’s Theatre Project, 45 W. Preston Street. Audiences who attend will vote for next year's theme for The Variations Project 2019.
