Steampunk is first and foremost a literary genre, or least a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy that includes social or technological aspects of the 19th century (the steam). It usually includes some deconstruction of, reimagining of, or rebellion against parts of it (the punk). Steampunk stories may include: The Victorian era as a setting but also include advanced machines based on 19th century technology such as zeppelins and airships, may include supernatural beings such as werewolves and vampires, and have a strong aesthetic and fashion element that incorporates machine parts (watches and keys), leather (often in many colors), symbols of love and freedom (the rebellion of punk), including, birds, hearts, wings, owls, ravens ships and zeppelins. Nature themes are also important to steam punk and include shells, trilobites and the nautilus. The colors associated with steam punk are brown, orange, brass, copper oxidized blue, heart red, and antique white.
