Inflammatory Bowel Disease Crohn's and Colitis
Ulcerative Colitis (UC) and Crohn’s Disease are types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease. In both conditions, parts of the digestive system become swollen, inflamed and ulcerated. There are some differences in the two conditions, mainly in the areas affected and the depth of inflammation.
At least 300,000 people in the UK have Ulcerative Colitis or Crohn’s Disease – about 1 person in 210.
These illnesses can occur at any age, but most frequently start in people aged between 10 and 40. Recent surveys suggest that Crohn’s is becoming increasingly common, especially among young people. The condition causes many long term symptoms and side effects such as depression, anaemia and arthritis. Both conditions are found worldwide, but are more common in developed countries. for more information please visit Crohn's & Colitis UK or ask Katy for details.
“In December 2015 I was diagnosed with severe Ulcerative Colitis Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). After being treated unsuccessfully with medication I was admitted to Norfolk and norwich hospital, where I stayed for a week trying to get well and understand my condition with the great support of the specialist IBD nurse and doctor. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for IBD just medication, management and the last resort is surgery. Therefore, I would like to try and give something back and help raise funds to finally one day cure this disease for good” - Katy
