Dunedin Railways own 7 1968 Mitishishi built Dj Diesel Electric Locomotives which now in 2018 celebrate 50 years of operation. The class were built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and numbered originally 64 for the New Zealand Railways Department with a modernisation loan from the World Bank to replace steam locomotives in the South Island.

9 members of the class remain, 7 owned by Dunedin Railways, 1 owned by Mainline Steam and 1 privately owned and both these are based in Plimmerton Wellington.

Like the interest in steam locomotives there is a now a similar interest in vintage Diesel locomotives and as time goes by many now remember more the early Diesel era than the steam locomotive era which stopped operation in 1971. See vintage Diesels operate again in the beautiful scenery of the line between Dunedin and Middlemarch.

Planned Operations

The event will focus around the Dj class locomotives but to add interest we are bringing down for the event 2 other early Diesel Electric Locomotives both which will be mainline certified and are owned and operated by the Diesel Traction Group based at Ferrymead in Christchurch.

Dg772 built in 1956 by English Electric.

Di1102 built in 1966 by English Electric.

Both these locomotives orgianlly were based out of Dunedin and where regularly used on the Otago Central line like the Dj class.
