Dr Rebecca Jinks will talk to us about the Armenian Genocide and the power of words ( this year’s HMD theme) to deny genocide. She will integrate Holocaust denial into her talk . We will be joined by members of the Armenian Institute and hope to have a discussion about how such atrocities can define one’s identity or whether it should do so.
Becky Jinks is a Trustee of the Armenian Institute (London) and a historian of comparative genocide at Royal Holloway, University of London. Her first book, Representing Genocide: The Holocaust as Paradigm? (2016) explored the ways in which the representation of the Holocaust has influenced the representation of other genocides. More recently, her work has explored international responses to the Armenian genocide, especially to gender-based violence and Armenian national reconstruction in its aftermath.
Becky will show a short film and we hope to be joined by the film maker - she will be also be bringing some friends with her. This could be a chance for a productive and interesting conversation. Please come along and be part of it.
There will be no service on this particular evening to allow plenty of time for the speaker and discussion and for the lighting of Yahrzeit candles and Kaddish.
Please bring food, vegetarian or (labelled) kosher fish and drink to share at the meal afterwards. Thank you.
