The Council is calling for a Congregational Meeting to discuss the letter drafted by Chuck Andersen and Brian Johnson, which brought up the subject of changing our church services to one (1) Sunday Service. If you have not had a chance to read this letter, please see below. Be sure to read this letter before our meeting so that everyone is aware of what is covered and why we are discussing this change.

Please keep in mind that the possibility of one (1) Sunday Service, will NOT affect our staff or musicians. We will combine the service to include the staff from both services, just as we have done so effectively and enjoyably during our Summer Service schedule. We will still have Assistants for Pastor and Communion, Readers, Ushers, Crucifers, Acolytes and Bread Bakers but the schedules will be spaced over a longer period of time, giving everyone a chance to participate and serve.

The Congregational Meeting will be held the last Sunday of April (the 29th) which is a combined Service @ 10 o’clock. We will have light refreshments after Service and then convene in the Sanctuary promptly at 11:30.

We will be going over the status of our Stewardship, as well, during this meeting.

It is our hope that we can come together in thought and action for the best possible outcome for Bethlehem’s future.

May we continue to follow the path God is leading us down here at BLC!

Your Servant in Christ,

Roberta Forbes - Council President
Bethlehem Lutheran Church

To the congregation of Bethlehem Lutheran Church
Comments and Recommendations from Chuck Anderson and Brian Johnson made to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Council on March 8, 2018.

Chuck and I attended the most recent Church Council meeting to share our comments about the current low attendance at both Sunday worship services and our recommendations for one worship service.
After our presentation and discussion the Church Council requested we share these with the whole congregation.

We wanted to point out the seriousness of our current physical, mental and financial conditions at Bethlehem Lutheran.
We feel our church is not presenting ourselves in the most positive way to attract and keep visitors.
We sense an urgency to address this situation.

Circumstances 35 years ago around the time of the new church building completion
One Service at 11AM average attendance of 300+

Circumstances in 2018
Two Services at 8:30AM and 11AM average combined attendance ~90

We are "shooting ourselves in the foot" as a church by supporting two, separate services
Two services seem to always align with the "we and they" reference to the other worship service
We have all seen the trend of lower attendance numbers at both our worship services
There are churches with 600+ members that have one worship service
We need to show our best attendance at a most competitive worship time
Visitors want to see a more full and vibrant congregation
We have observed visitors to each of our services not return to worship with us
We have seen the trend of lower attendance numbers at both our worship services
Multi-generation worshippers are necessary for a healthy church
Our combined worship last summer was a good experience of a healthy, vibrant church

Go to one worship service immediately
Look at which hours on Sunday people will most likely attend
Maintain all the current staff
Blend the music similar to last summer
This Church Council can be the beginning of a new era for Bethlehem Lutheran Church
Additionally, change our fiscal year to January to June to help new Council members by giving them a full year of their program. Currently, the new Council inherits the budget and program from the prior Council.
