The new PBS adaptation of Little Women heralds it as a universal coming of age story, with an emphasis on the bravery and accomplishments of the four March daughters. At the same time, Little Women is set during the Civil War—a historical period that has also been seen as an apt metaphor for the conflict between the aspirations of the “little” girls and the social expectations they face as married “women.” Join Susan Williams, Professor of English at The Ohio State University, to explore this beloved story in its social context and discuss later film adaptations of Alcott’s novel.
