After successful premiers in Melbourne for Carnatic music festivals 2016/2017, sold out performance at Kalakshetra-India in 2018, Becoming Subbulakshmi and Nagarathnammal's Dream are coming to the Bhavan in London this May. The performances are talking dances conceived and performed by Dr Priya Srinivasan in collaboration with Carnatic singer Uthra Vijay, offering a unique perspective in highlighting women's voices. This is to depict unknown aspects of MS Subbulakshmi's life using recordings of her voice, accompanied by Carnatic vocalist Uthra Vijay as the voice of Bangalore Nagarathnammal who was responsible for the Thyagaraja Utsavam as we know it today.
This special event for World Dance Day also features a talk by Dr Avanthi Meduri, a Carnatic vocal concert by Uthra Vijay accompanied by Bhavan resident musicians as well as collaborations between the two Melbourne based artists with London based Kuchipudi performer and resident teacher at The Bhavan, Arunima Kumar and teacher and performer Bhagya Lakshmi.
Dr Priya Srinivasan is a Melbourne based dancer, choreographer and scholar who was a tenured Associate Professor of Dance at the University of California in Critical Dance Studies. Uthra Vijay is the Artistic Director of Keerthana School of Music in Melbourne that she founded in 2003.
