The Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum will host the 2018 Great Biloxi Schooner Mayors Cup on Saturday, May 5. The race will start at noon from the Biloxi Schooner Pier Complex on Point Cadet and will proceed down the Biloxi channel past the Lighthouse, just as Biloxi’s fleet of working schooners did every summer from the late 1800's until the 1930's. The 2018 race will have Biloxi Mayor FoFo Gilich racing against D’Iberville Mayor Rusty Quave.
In the early 1900's, thousands of tourists and locals would crowd the piers and seawall in Biloxi to watch this nationally-renowned competition of captains and crews who made Biloxi the Seafood Capital of the World. The Museum is collaborating with the Biloxi Bay Chamber and the City of Biloxi to revive the Mayors Cup style regatta, but instead of using the flying scots, they will race aboard the Biloxi Schooners, otherwise known as the Official Tall Ships of the State of Mississippi!
Admission is FREE! Fish plates will be available for $7. Entertainment will be provided by Michael Halat. There will also be a cash bar. Commemorative T-shirts can be purchased for $20 at The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum and the Biloxi Visitors Center.
Stick around after the race for the after-party!
