Auntie's Bookstore is proud to present Reza Aslan--internationally renowned writer, commentator, professor, producer, and scholar of religions--discussing his new title, "God: A Human History", at the Bing Crosby Theater on Monday, November 13 at 7pm. This discussion will be moderated by Shawn Vestal, an author and journalist for The Spokesman-Review. His books, including his #1 New York Times Bestseller, "Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth", have been translated into dozens of languages around the world. He is also a recipient of the prestigious James Joyce Award.
His November 2017 publication, "God: A Human History," encourages readers to embrace a deeper, more expansive understanding of God. Within the pages, Aslan narrates the history of religion as a remarkably cohesive attempt to understand the divine by giving it human traits and emotions. According to Aslan, this innate desire to humanize God is hardwired in our brains, making it a central feature of nearly every religious tradition. Aslan writes, "Whether we are aware of it or not, and regardless if we are believers or not, what the vast majority of us think about when we think about God is a divine version of ourselves."
More than just a history of understanding God, Aslan attempts to get to the root of the urge to humanize the divine. Whether you believe in one God, many gods, or no god at all, "God: A Human History" will transform the way you think about the divine and its role in our everyday lives.
Shawn Vestal made his literary debut with "Godforsaken Idaho", a story collection that won the 2014 PEN Robert W. Bingham Prize and was shortlisted for the Saroyan Prize. A graduate of the Eastern Washington University MFA program, his stories have appeared in Tin House, Ecotone, McSweeney’s, The Southern Review and other journals. He writes a column for The Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Washington, where he lives with his wife and son.
