An evening of award-winning selected shorts from the Black Maria Film Festival’s 37th Annual Tour – 2018, will be presented on Tuesday evening April 10th at 7:00PM in the Gothic Lounge, Hepburn Hall Room 202, at NJ City University, 2039 Kennedy Blvd., Jersey City, NJ.
The program was co-curated by IMAP MFA candidate, Nicole Pometti, and Festival Director Jane Steuerwald, and focuses on topics of global concern including personal stories of empowerment, LGBTQ issues, and social justice. The event is free and open to the University community and the public. One of the featured works, “On the Cusp,” is by Media Arts Department graduate, Yuri Alves, Class of 2006. The film is a moving portrait of celebrated skateboarder and activist, Tommy Cuba, of Newark, NJ, who will be present for the Q & A.
The Black Maria Film Festival was founded in 1981 as a tribute to Thomas Edison’s development of the motion picture at his laboratory, dubbed the “Black Maria” film studio, the first in the world, in West Orange. The Festival attracts and showcases the work of independent filmmakers internationally. The Black Maria travels to audiences at museums, cinemas, cultural centers, colleges and universities throughout the United States and abroad. The Festival is a project of the Thomas A. Edison Media Arts Consortium, an independent non-profit organization housed in the Media Arts Department of NJCU.
