World War II & Bloomington-Normal
When Congress declared war on Imperial Japan and Hitler’s Germany in December 1941, Bloomington-Normal was ready. -
- Sylvania Electric attracted war workers.
- Illinois State University housed the Navy V-12 unit.
- Everyone, from schoolchildren to the elderly, pitched in despite
rationing and food shortages.
- And servicemen from Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul visited
Bloomington’s Beltline for a ‘good time’.
As part of the 2018 Bloomington Reads Programming Series, local author Gretchen Knapp will bring to life the sights and sounds of the 1940s home front which created the Greatest Generation. A book sale and signing will follow this 7pm program in the Library’s Community Room.
