Topic - Project Management: Developing a Culture of Safety in the
Field
Presented by: Scott Newton, Environmental Scientist

Chapter members can enjoy free appetizers! Non-members are welcome to join our Chapter for $10/ year!

Most people who have conducted fieldwork, even for a single season can share stories where they faced risk of injury or death on the job. In many cases, those risks are, if not high, inherent to the work. How we mitigate those risks can vary greatly within our workplace community. Through his work as a field technician and a project manager, Scott has found that the culture surrounding field biology frequently functions in opposition to safety policies. Further, this culture often results in a perception by leadership that safety policy is effective when it is not. Scott believes supervisors
cannot assume that providing safety policy alone is effective at reducing risks to staff. He suggests methods to change workplace culture and provide effective safety policies with a goal of creating a safer fieldwork environment.
