'Aromatherapie' is a French word, coined by the chemist Gatefosse in the 1930s. Aromatherapy works on a holistic level by addressing the physical body mind and soul. The effect that smell has on the olfactory conjures up the most potent memories creating a powerful influence on the nervous system. Fragrance can and does evoke moods and emotions to counteract stress and hormonal response. The olfactory is the only sense in which the receptor nerve endings are in direct contact with the outside world. The olfactory nerve cells are the only cells in the body that repair themselves if damaged. All of this is further emphasised by the hypothalamus (the part of the forebrain which coordinates the autonomic and pituitary) on our response or reaction to smell and how that impacts our environment.
