This month, we're continuing our Intermediate Lesson Series on musical styles of Blues and the dances that go with them. Each week will cover a different style of music or regional form of Blues and the dances and movements that make sense to that type of Blues.
This week Brenda Russell will be focusing on Country Blues (some of the earliest known Blues, from rural areas, usually played by a single musician with guitar and vocals). Prior to the introduction of Swing music in America, Blues music was played in more of a straight rhythm with a binary structure. This type of music continued to evolve in its own direction, while Blues later became greatly influenced by Swing. Blues still utilizes this rhythm structure in particular songs and regional styles today. We will explore this simple rhythm structure, some of the common variations of that style, and later examples of the music, all the while dancing common steps for this particular musical style.
