Each year on April 9th, we hold a memorial ceremony at the Brainerd Armory. This ceremony honors the US and Filipino forces who fought against the Japanese on the Bataan Peninsula in the early days of World War Two. They held out against tremendous odds for four months before finally being ordered to surrender on April 9th, 1942. After their surrender, they were subjected to the Bataan Death March and three and a half years of brutal treatment in Japanese POW camps. Fewer than half of them survived.
We remember in particular the members of the Brainerd-based 34th Tank Company of the Minnesota National Guard, who joined three other National Guard companies to form the 194th Tank Battalion.
American Legion Post 255 and Womens Auxillary, VFW Post 1647, the DAV, and the 194th Regiment Association will be among those supporting and participating in the event.
The public is welcome and we encourage you to attend. http://www.brainerdbataan.com/wreath-laying-ceremony.html
